  • 1.3 Implement strategies to support positive behavior change.

Understanding young children’s behavior—especially those with disabilities—can sometimes feel like decoding a mystery. As early childhood professionals, we’re often faced with challenging behaviors that disrupt learning, play, and social relationships. These behaviors may include tantrums, refusal, aggression, or withdrawal. While they can be frustrating or concerning, they’re typically not random. All behavior serves a purpose and is influenced by the environment.

In this module, you’ll learn about the ABC model of behavior—Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence—a framework rooted in the field of Behavioral Science. By using this model, early childhood professionals can better understand why a child behaves a certain way and what can be done to support more positive behavior. The intent of this model is not to label certain children as "difficult." Instead, it encourages observation, reflection, and intentional strategies to promote growth, inclusion, and skill development.

Through this lens, we learn to observe what happens before, during, and after a child’s actions. By doing so, we gain insight into what the child is trying to communicate and how we can support them in more effective, compassionate ways.

Whether you’re a teacher, assistant, therapist, or caregiver, the ABCs can be a practical tool in your daily work. Understanding behavior is the first step toward changing it, and with the right tools, you can be a powerful advocate for a child’s success.
